Disaster Recovery Solution for Lucy, a Legal Application

Hello! I would like to tell you about our project with the law firm Domański Zakrzewski Palinka Sp. k. (DZP), where we had the opportunity to implement a Disaster Recovery (DR) solution for the Lucy application. Data loss is a significant threat to companies, so more and more businesses are turning to DR solutions that provide information protection and business continuity. In the case of DZP, we focused on utilizing the Amazon Web Services (AWS) public cloud.

Lucy is an application used for document management and legal work. It already contains over 5 million documents, so you can imagine how important it is for DZP to ensure the security of this data. Our goal was to conduct a Proof of Concept (PoC), a practical test that would confirm the effectiveness of an AWS-based DR solution for the Lucy application.

DZP is one of the leading law firms in Poland, providing advisory services to clients from various industries, both domestic and international, since 1993. Our task was to enhance the application’s security level, test the DR location in the AWS cloud, and ensure the operational continuity of the Lucy application. It was also crucial to flawlessly restore the environment in case of a failure, maintain data consistency, integrity, and completeness, and meet the appropriate Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) parameters.

We selected the AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery (AWS DRS) solution to execute this project. AWS DRS allows minimizing data loss and downtime through fast and reliable application recovery at an optimal cost. With continuous replication, monitoring, and testing capabilities, infrastructure can be easily restored in the cloud. Our tests confirmed the effectiveness of this solution, and the client gained automated and secure DR, resulting in higher application availability. Moreover, the costs are efficient as replicated servers are only launched when needed (Pay as you Go model).
